This piece is a spin on the trending question, ‘would you rather be alone in the woods with a man or a bear?’
When planning this piece, it was important to me to convey strength in the main subject. Stoic beauty, without fear.
The bear is tame and, although it wears an aggressive facial expression (after the style of Japanese woodblock prints), it’s distinctly under the woman’s dominion.
The piece is a composition of various models and characters, completed in a person of my imagination, to represent a variety of women. Stylistically, I've endeavoured to blend European realism with Korean classical art and Japanese Ukiyo-e (woodblock prints).
The character herself wears Hanbok — traditional Korean clothing. As I've spent a lot of time in Korea, and my partner is Korean, this lends the piece a personal significance that would be missing otherwise.
